The forums were helpful. It turned out that plugging into a different USB port on my computer fixes the problem. Strange that one port works and the other sometimes works. It might be that the port that worked has the regular USB label and the problem port is labeled SS-USB ).
I see that you use an A Star Prime for this. I am also using one for a robot project. I have this strange problem where it sometimes won't upload code, I have to unplug the USB, plug it back in and try again, sometimes it works the first try and sometimes it takes as many as 10 tries. Do you have this problem? (I'm running arduino 1.6.3 with the board set as a leonardo).
That is so true about every motor needing an encoder. The 3pi does do surprisingly well without encoders, but still would be much more awesome with encoders. The Zumo would also be much improved with the addition of encoders; I know that it is quite cramped around the motors, but would these possibly fit on a Zumo?
Wow, this looks like a great improvement over the old GP2Y0A02YK0F sensor! I really like that it has an enable pin, and 0.1" holes, so that wires or header pins can be soldered on, much better than the old ones with connectors. Not sure that I like that there is only one mounting hole now.
Does this one fix the noise issues on the power line that the old one had (I had to add extra capacitors to clean up the power)?
As part of the build team on Troubled Child I can say that the Pololu relay board worked great (once we discovered that the 12V relay board does not work at 5V, but the 5V version works great!). It was really nice that we could trigger the relays with a 3.3V signal.
Would this encoder work on a 3Pi or a Zumo? Encoders are one thing that both of these platforms are lacking. Anyway, this looks like a great solution for other small robots.

Update: Orangutans and 3pi robot can be programmed with Arduino 1.6.0
- 26 February 2015Wow, that's kind of neat!

New product: Adafruit Data Logging Shield for Arduino
- 15 January 2014Would this be compatible with 3.3V arduinos? I'm guessing not, as it has a 5V level shifter.
