If you have been thinking about getting your own mini sumo robot but were waiting for the right kit to come along, we might just have the one for you! This robot outperforms many other robots in its standard configuration, and there are many options to expand on its basic capabilities.
The Solarbotics Sumovore is a great entry-level kit that can serve as an exciting introduction to the world of mini robot sumo and robotics in general. The stock kit comes with two obstacle detection sensors in the front and four reflectance sensors on the bottom for detecting lines or the edge of a sumo ring. A fifth bottom sensor and a rear obstacle sensor option are available. The Sumovore comes with a detachable "brain board" made up entirely of discrete electronics; this analog system can be set for one of two behaviors: robot sumo or line following. The Sumovore has proven itself in multiple rounds of competition at the Las Vegas Robot Club meetings. The gearmotors give the robot more speed than its modified-R/C-servo competitors, and the robot outperformed other robots including programmable robots. Because the control portion of the robot is on a separate circuit board, you can replace the analog brain with your own microcontroller system or one of several optional microcontroller carrier boards. The Sumovore kit comes with excellent instructions with many detailed pictures to step beginners through every component in the robot. Assembly takes a few hours, and basic electronics tools, such as a soldering iron, wire strippers, diagonal cutters, and small screwdrivers, are required. The robot is powered by 6 AA batteries, which are not included in the kit.
