We have not heard of anyone who has tried doing speech synthesis with a 32U4 board like our A-Star Primes. If you do try it, we would love to know how it goes!
You can run your motors from the VNH5019 motor driver shield without using our Arduino library. The library just makes it easier to get started using the board as a motor driver shield. You can directly send logic level signals to the board's logic connections, which we break out on the left side of the shield. If you do use the shield as a general purpose driver, I suggest looking at the VNH5019 datasheet for information not covered in the VNH5019 user's guide.
We do not use Simulink here, so we cannot really help you with it. If you need more help, you can post your question on our forum or to the MathWorks User Community, which should have a bigger community of people who are more familiar with programming with Simulink.
